In comparison to its predecessor, the RTX 5070, only shows a small improvement in theoretical performance based on its specifications. It boasts a 4% increase in CUDA cores and an additional 2 RT cores. However, these new cores, including the Tensor cores, are part of a newer design. The clock speeds remain comparable, and it retains the same amount of memory, but this time it’s GDDR7, making it faster.

The AMD RX 9070 is expected to face typical competition, but we don’t have official details about it yet. However, whispers in the industry suggest some intriguing possibilities, such as a larger 16GB of GDDR6 memory. This additional memory could provide more space for modern gaming at 1440p, as some top games currently require over 15GB at 4K. The 12GB on the RX 5070 might run out of steam when it comes to high-end visual features in the near future.

At CES 2025, Nvidia stated that the 5070 would match the performance of the 4090. However, it appears now that even the 5080 doesn’t meet this claim, making the initial statement questionable. On Nvidia’s graph, it seems that the non-Super variant of the 5070 might be about 20-30% faster than the 4070.

The AMD RX 9070 is said to match the performance of a 7900 GRE or be slightly quicker than a 4070 Super, which could mean it’s nearly as powerful as the 5070. If these rumors hold true, AMD would need to price their product lower than Nvidia’s, especially considering scalpers might inflate the cost once they obtain it.

An intriguing aspect that needs attention, however, revolves around enhancement and image production – areas where Nvidia’s DLSS 4 excels significantly. Multi-frame generation can be impressive under specific conditions. AMD is planning to launch FSR4 and its proprietary frame generation technology with the RX 9000 series, indicating a strong possibility of matching Nvidia’s performance in these aspects.

AMD’s time is now, but can it meet the moment?

It appears AMD is planning to release a new graphics card that’s expected to perform similarly to the 5070, but with additional memory, exclusive frame generation technology, and enhanced dynamic FSR upscaling. If these features hold true, the key to its success will undoubtedly be its price. If AMD manages to sell this card for around $450 or even $500, and if they can keep it in stock, it could become extremely popular.

Given the current inflated prices of GPUs like the RTX 4060 costing over $400, a performance-wise alternative at approximately double the power for only $100 more could be a major success for AMD. However, whether this becomes a significant victory for them depends on their stock supply. If they have an abundance of it, AMD stands to gain significantly; otherwise, it’s uncertain at this point who might come out on top.
